On this day in history, Greg Maddux, pitching for the Chicago Cubs becomes only the 13th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

To put this in perspective, America’s oldest sport, has only had 16 pitchers ever reach this milestone.  Only three pitchers (Curt Schilling, 2006, Pedro Martinez, 2007, and John Smoltz, 2008) have achieved 3,000 strikeouts since Maddux.  In my humble opinion, with pitch counts, inning restrictions, and the ever increasing role of specialty relief pitching, I don’t believe we will ever see another pitcher reach 3,000 strikeouts.  To support my point, CC Sabathia leads all active pitchers with 2,650 strikeouts, and he’s 35.
